Breast Augmentation surgery

The other name is ‘augmentation mammoplasty’ in which the size of the breast is increased, or changed or altered by placing breast implants. After pregnancy, weight loss or cancer, the breasts may lose volume and their natural shape. This surgery restores the lost shape and it improves the symmetry. Some women prefer this surgery to correct the congenital defects of their breasts.

How is a Breast Augmentation Procedure Performed?

As per FDA, women should be atleast 18 years of age to undergo breast augmentation procedure with saline-filled implants & 22-23 years of age for silicone implants. The surgeon should have atleast 7 years of surgical experience in plastic surgery. Breast augmentation surgery is an outpatient procedure. Before the procedure, the patient has a medical evaluation with feedback from the surgeon. As recommended by the doctor, certain medications need to be stopped weeks before the surgery.

  • Before breast augmentation surgery, the doctor will prescribe certain medicines to ease out the pain.
  • Under general anesthesia, the plastic surgeon will make small and minimal incisions on the breasts or under your arms, or around the nipples. It helps in less scarring later. Incisions are based on the type of implant, degree of enlargement and the patient’s preference.
  • The Breast implant is inserted into a pocket, it can be under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue.

There are two main types of implants:

  1. Saline-filled implants: These implants are made up of silicon shells and filled with sterile saline water.
  2. Silicone-filled implants: These implants are filled with silicone shells and plastic gel or silicone.
  • The surgeon then positions the breast implants. Positioning depends on the type of the implant, degree of enlargement, surgeon’s recommendations and the patient’s body type.
  • Later, the incisions and the skin is closed with sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape.

How Long Will the Results Last?

One thing about breast implants is that they do not last a lifetime. They may need to be replaced. A visit to the surgeon in a year is mandatory for evaluating breast health because over the years, breasts may change its shape due to aging, weight-loss, hormonal change and gravity.
