Diabetes

diabetes treatmentWhat is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not produce ‘insulin’ or ‘right amount of insulin’ for glucose absorption. The food we eat is broken down into glucose, which is the main source of energy. Glucose needs to get absorbed in the blood for that insulin is necessary. Glucose is not properly absorbed into the body cells if the insulin is absent or deficient. The excess glucose gets excreted through urine. The doctor may perform Random blood sugar test, Fasting blood sugar test, Oral glucose tolerance test or urine test to diagnose and confirm diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

There are 3 types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 diabetes
  2. Type 2 diabetes
  3. Gestational diabetes

1. Type 1 Diabetes

It is an autoimmune disease, in which the cells of the immune system called “T cells” turn against the beta cells of the pancreas and destroy them. As a result the pancreas produce little or no insulin. This affects the entire metabolism of the body. The type1 diabetic patient needs to take insulin daily for a lifetime. Various factors like food, toxins and virus contribute in the development of this type of diabetes. It may lead to diabetic coma if left untreated. The occurrence of type 1 is quite common among children and young adults.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

It is a very common type and has affected 95% of the diabetic population. Type 2 diabetes develops slowly and is linked with old-age, extreme obesity, family history of diabetes, past history of gestational diabetes, not being physically active and ethnicity. In this type, the production of insulin by the pancreas slowly declines, also gradually affecting the metabolism. It can be prevented or managed by making some lifestyle and dietary changes and maintaining normal body weight.

3. Gestational diabetes

The occurrence of Gestational diabetes is more in African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, and women with a family history of diabetes. It develops only during pregnancy and vanishes after childbirth or termination of pregnancy.

Causes of Diabetes

The exact cause is still unknown, but scientists associate it with genetics, certain pancreatic diseases, certain drugs and sedentary lifestyle. When the body’s immune system destroys the beta cells or the islet tissue, the body is unable to produce insulin which leads to Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes may occur in individuals who are in their teenage to late thirties. Hormonal and metabolic changes during pregnancy causes Gestational diabetes. The ethnic groups like African Americans, Hispanic Americans and American Indians are more likely to get Type2 diabetes.

Diabetes Diagnosis

The doctor may perform a Random blood sugar test, Fasting blood sugar test, Oral glucose tolerance test or urine test to diagnose and confirm diabetes.

A fasting plasma glucose measures blood glucose when the patient had gone at least 8 hours without eating. It detects diabetes & prediabetes condition.

An oral glucose tolerance test measures blood sugar after the patient had gone at least 8 hours without eating and 2 hours after he/she drinks a measured amount of glucose mixed with water.

In a random plasma glucose test, the doctor checks the blood sugar. A patient can have his/her meals before that test.

Benefits of Diabetes Surgery

Few associated complications can be treated with the surgery:

  • Vitrectomy is done to improve eye diseases.
  • Pancreas transplantation can be a good option when insulin is unable to keep blood sugar in the target range.
  • Pancreatic islet cell surgery: Research is still ongoing. During this surgery, the donated islet cells of the pancreas are inserted through a vein in the patient’s liver. These cells start making insulin after the surgery. Once they start functioning properly, then there is no need for insulin injections.
  • Heart surgery for cardiovascular problems
  • Weight loss surgery to keep weight and sugar in control.

Alternative therapies:

  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic therapy & Biofeedback
  • Intake of Herbal medicines and natural substances
  • Massage therapy
