What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Due to the small stomach pouch the gastric bypass limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time so that the person feels full sooner and remains full for a longer time. As the portion of the small intestine is bypassed, so the body also absorbs less amount of calories. 3. Sleeve Gastrectomy

During this surgical procedure a thin vertical sleeve of the stomach is formed by stapling off the rest of the stomach. This limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and causes the person to feel completely full very soon and does not let the person feel hungry for long. As the person eats less food, the body will stop to store all the excessively consumed calories and will further start to use the energy derived from the stored fat in the body.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Procedure

Gastric bypass surgery is done as an open surgery through a large incision in the abdomen to allow the surgeon to reach your stomach. On the other hand, it can also be done as a laparoscopic surgery by using a lighted tube attached with a small camera which is called a laparoscope. Several small incisions are made in the abdomen and this laparoscope is pushed through them. Usually, surgeons prefer laparoscopic surgery to the open one because it reduces the stay at the hospital and the recovery is faster. The pain is also less and there are smaller scars, while this surgery also reduces the risk of developing hernia or infection.


A patient may be required to stay in the hospital for 2 to 4 days after the procedure. Initially, the patient will be able to have only liquid or pureed food for 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery. Sometimes there may be catheter attached to the larger bypassed portion of the stomach which will drain the excess fluid for about 4 weeks or less. Slowly soft food and then regular food will be added to the diet about one month after the surgery. The doctor will advise the patient to chew slowly and completely and not drink anything for 30 minutes before or after eating food. The patient will have to understand the proper wound care from the doctor, pain relieving drugs and the time required before the patient can resume physical activities. The surgeon will also advise regarding the time before you should change the dressing on the incision.

It is necessary for these people to take 1600 to 2000 IU of vitamin D daily and 1600 mg of calcium supplementation daily for the protection of bone health.
  • Multivitamins: Patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery should take multivitamin supplement that contains 200% of the daily requirement of a normal person.
  • Vitamin B12 supplements: People with gastric bypass surgery require to take vitamin B12 injections for the rest of their lives in order to prevent bone fractures.
  • Vitamin D: If vitamin D deficiency is detected then oral vitamin D supplements is recommended.
  • Iron supplement: According to some research results, after gastric bypass surgery the normal amount of iron contained in a regular multivitamin is not enough to prevent the occurrence of anemia. For teens and women who are menstruating it may be necessary to take the amount of iron contained in two multivitamins apart from 50 to 100 mg of elemental iron every day. If you are taking an iron supplement then it is also advisable to take vitamin C for the easier absorption of the iron in the body.
