Intrauterine insemination(IUI)

Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a treatment for infertility due to some causes in women under 41 years of age. This method is used to separate the highly motile sperm from the sluggish ones from the male sample and inserted into the uterus of the woman. This treatment is not effective in couples with:

Intrauterine Insemination

  • Tubal blockage or severe damage to the fallopian tubes
  • Menopause
  • Severe male factor infertility
  • Severe endometriosis

The age of the woman is a major factor in the success of an IUI treatment because it does not work in women over 40 years of age. At the same time, it does not work if the woman is younger but has considerably high day 3 FSH level or other signs of a very low ovarian reserve. On the other hand, if the sperm count or, morphology or motility scores are very low IUI is not likely to work.

When Is IUI Done?

Intrauterine insemination is used in cases where couples have unexplained infertility. It is also used in cases of problems with ovulation, mild endometriosis, and mild male factor infertility and cervical factor infertility. This is a treatment which should be utilized for maximum up to three months for women who are ovulating normally on their own. It is alright to try this procedure for a longer duration with women who are taking drugs to encourage ovulation.

Am I A Candidate For IUI?

If you are a woman below 40 years of age and have unexplained infertility problems then you are a candidate for intrauterine insemination. The overall general health of the woman should be good for the success of this procedure. At the same time, if you are a couple with problems with ovulation, cervical factor infertility, mild endometriosis or mild male factor infertility, you should opt for intrauterine insemination.

Risk Factors For IUI

There is very low risk for any complications arising due to intrauterine insemination. The woman may end up with infection in the uterus and tubes due to bacterial contamination in the semen sample, or due to a contaminated sterile catheter in the vagina or cervical area during the procedure. Cleaning the cervix carefully and practice of caution during the technique make the occurrence of this quite rare.

IUI Procedure

  • The woman undergoing this procedure is administered drugs to stimulate ovulation causing development of multiple eggs and the timing of the insemination is decided in such a way as to coincide with the ovulation.
  • After 2-5 days of abstinence from ejaculation, a specimen of semen is produced by masturbation.
  • The semen is washed or processed in the laboratory. The sperm and other components of the semen are separated from each other and the sperms are concentrated in a small volume. Different techniques and media are used for washing and separating the sperm. This procedure takes around 30-60 minutes.
  • The cervical area is opened with the help of a speculum and the area is cleaned.
  • The washed specimen of highly motile sperm is either placed in the cervix – known as intracervical insemination – or higher in the cavity of the uterus – known as intrauterine insemination – with the help of a sterile and flexible catheter.
