Best Candidate for Kidney Transplant

If a patient is committed & willing to accept this lifelong responsibility, then he/she is an ideal candidate for Kidney Transplant. Before a transplant, the doctor may consider other factors such as the overall health of the patient, any associated diseases like heart disease, cancer or infection and other risks.

Diagnosis and Tests For Kidney Transplant

The patient needs to undergo certain tests for tissue type and blood type because it should match with the donor’s kidney. These tests are compulsory because when a new kidney is replaced with the diseased kidney, the body may consider it as a foreign object and reject it. The doctor will also check for other significant diseases like heart or lung disease, cancer which might decrease the life span.

Surgeries Available For Kidney Transplantation

  • Laparoscopic Nephrectomy
  • Open Nephrectomy

1. Laparoscopic Nephrectomy

Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a less invasive technique in which a few inches long several incisions are made in the abdomen. With the help of other surgical instruments, the doctor will insert the camera or laparoscope through the cuts. Blood vessels & ureter are tightly fixed or clamped off with clamping instruments, then the surgeon carefully detaches the kidney from the surrounding tissue and removes it through the incision, and below the belly button. A new kidney is now replaced and the patient’s blood vessels are attached to it. The incisions are then stapled & stitched back.

2. Open Nephrectomy

Another method is Open nephrectomy in which an incision up to 9-10 inches long is made in the abdomen, just below the ribs or right over the lower ribs. The muscles & tissues are cut, the ureter and blood vessels are clamped, some lymph nodes and the adrenal gland is removed. Then the surgeon carefully removes the entire kidney and replaces it with the new kidney. The incisions are then stapled & stitched.

Kidney Transplantation Procedure

Transplantation is done when a patient has severe kidney infection or pyelonephritis, cancer, extremely large polycystic kidney, or nephrotic syndrome.

The operation takes about 3-5 hours. The kidney could be from a live or cadaver donor. Before the surgery few tests would be performed to check & ensure that the blood & tissue type matches with the donor’s kidney. The doctor may choose laparoscopic surgery or traditional surgery, depending upon the patient’s health condition. The diseased kidney is removed and replaced with the donor’s healthy kidney. The new kidney is connected to the patient’s blood vessels and the ureter for resuming the blood flow and its function.
