Heart attack is a medical condition which is caused mainly due to damage to the muscles of the heart. This is also known as ‘myocardial infarction’ (MI) and is the result when the heart muscles are deprived of their blood supply for a long period of time.
Although not all problems of the heart may show noticeable signs there are certain symptoms which can indicate towards the development of the heart disorder. The signs and symptoms of a heart attack vary and may be seen in different combinations in different persons.
These are the major signs and symptoms of a heart attack:
Chest discomfort – This is the most common sign of a heart attack. In case of a blocked artery in the chest, or while having a heart attack, the person feels intense stabbing pain in the chest followed with a pressurizing sensation. This pain may last from several seconds to a few minutes and can also happen when the body is at rest.
Nausea/Heartburn – The person will commonly experience stomach pain, heartburn, indigestion or nausea during a heart attack. Women are more likely to have these combined signs as compared to men.
Radiating pain – Another common sign of a heart attack is the feeling of pain in the left arm which radiates down the body on that side. This usually begins at the chest and moves outwards.
Dizziness – Sudden onset of a spell of dizziness or fainting along with shortness of breath and chest discomfort are also signs of a heart attack.
Facial pain – In some cases, the patient may also experience pressure in the center of the chest that can be felt spreading upwards to the throat and the jaw.
Fatigue – Sudden tiredness after performing a common physical activity, such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, etc may also indicate towards the beginning of a heart attack.
Snoring – Unusually loud and persistent snoring, which tends to sound like choking/gasping, may also indicate towards the development of a heart attack in a person.
It is highly-advised to seek immediate medical attention in case any of the signs and symptoms of heart attack are felt.
After the diagnosis of the heart attack has been done there are several treatment options available and the doctor will advise you on the best-suited heart attack treatment.
These are the various forms of treatment for a heart attack:
Initially, the doctor will try and treat the heart attack and its complications using medicinal drugs. These are mainly designed to prevent blood clots, by disallowing the collection of plaque, and preventing ischemia.
These medicinal drugs are required to be administered as soon as possible following a heart attack for maximum success in treatment. These medicines also prevent further damage to the heart and its tissues.
Other medications are designed to improve the functioning of the heart and to lessen the work load from it as well as helping to widen the blood vessels.
Surgical treatment for heart attack is usually required in most severe cases or when there is extensive damage to the heart.
The doctor will initially evaluate all the physical symptoms by checking the arteries, heart muscles, etc, thoroughly. Angioplasty/stent is used to widen a restricted artery (blood vessel). Heart Bypass Surgery helps to restore normal blood supply to the heart’s muscles.
Treatment for a heart attack is meant to treat the complications arising out of a heart attack and to prevent it from occurring in the future as much as possible.
